Resilience: Faith, Focus, Triumph, the Alonzo Mourning autobiography

This is a moving excerpt of NBA star Alonzo Mourning’s new book “Resilience: Faith Focus, Triumph” with Dan Wetzel. Below the break is a heart-warming story of how Zo used his problem to touch one child's life.

How Will You Find Your Way?

The pressure cooker of our outer world is starting to boil. The resulting disintegration of the status quo is causing dramas to spiral out of control, setting off conflicts everywhere as people struggle to adjust.

We see the influence all around, even when we'd prefer not to. The financial system that once worked quietly out of view is now trembling on its foundations, propped up with public money and back-room deals.

Governmental operations are buckling under corruption and mismanagement, and demonstrating that even its enormous powers are no match for the unforeseen ravages of man and nature. Escalating political battles call into question even the best of intentions, leaving proponents to fight over who will get to hold the beast's reigns and feed its insatiable appetite for more.

Jobs that once could last a lifetime are now at best temporary islands of relief from periodic unemployment, triggering fears of an uncertain future and the struggles of lifestyles in flux.

The question for each of us is, how will we find our way through the storm and still be able to carve out lives that serve us?

How do you make your choices, and where are they leading you?

We each have our own paths to awakening, as well as to the experiences we came to get. While those paths are not always within our conscious determination, we certainly have the ability to influence the course by which we choose to go about our efforts in this world.

The challenges of your life are opportunities to move toward that awakening and perfection of what you are all about. The question is what will you need to see them as such, and seize the chance they offer you?

The Challenge of Awakening

Awakening to what we are is not usually a matter of an alarm going off and voila, we're wide awake. Rather, it is a process that begins at birth in our "first" life and continues until we complete our "last."

Each stage of that journey brings new challenges for us to experience and explore.

One of the greatest comes with the ego's expanding awareness of its other aspects (e.g., the soul or higher self) vis-a-vis its efforts to deal with the challenges of its life.

Expanding Your Concept of Self

You are what you think you are. So look at yourself. How do you see yourself? What are the beliefs you hold about who you are, what you can do, and cannot? Can you see how those play out within your life, and in that picture you see looking back at you from the mirror?

Your life is the expression of that image you hold. What you see is what you get, so to speak. If you see yourself with limitations, your life will play out that way.

Now, the question is, how can you expand your concept of what you think you are?
